China’s New Energy Vehicle Industry: Pioneering the Intelligent Future

In recent years, China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturers have not only achieved remarkable commercial success globally but have also embarked on a new frontier where electric cars are vying to become more intelligent. This burgeoning momentum is driven by the country’s tech firms specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and smart hardware, as they strive to reshape the landscape of the NEV market.

The Rise of Smart Cockpits

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi, for example, unveiled its first NEV model, SU7, last year, with plans to enter the market in 2024. During the launch ceremony, the company’s CEO showcased SU7’s intelligent features, including the Zoom Bird’s Eye View, large-scale road modeling, and a navigation autopilot system set to cover 100 Chinese cities by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, tech titan Huawei introduced its second electric vehicle, Aito M9, featuring a futuristic smart cockpit running on Harmony OS, Huawei’s self-developed operating system.

These advancements signal a shift away from the low-price strategy once adopted by domestic carmakers. Instead, they emphasize the selling points of an intelligent driving experience, attracting substantial order volumes.

Innovation-Driven Enterprises

China’s auto sector is embracing a vibrant culture of innovation in intelligent driving, with new technologies continually emerging. Internet giants and non-traditional auto parts suppliers have disrupted the market with rapid upgrades. These companies leverage China’s diverse terrain, complex natural environments, and varied road conditions to comprehensively and reliably test their smart technologies.

One notable development is the increasing prevalence of augmented reality-head-up display (AR-HUD) technology in newly launched NEVs. By September 2023, over 1.4 million vehicles in China were equipped with AR-HUD, injecting new momentum into supply chains for key components like curved mirrors and polarizing optical devices.

The Self-Driving Era Beckons

At the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), five out of 35 laser radar (Lidar) manufacturers were Chinese, showcasing their capabilities. Startups like HESAI Technology and RoboSense unveiled ultra-long-range Lidar technology with impressive standard range measurements. Chinese automakers are increasingly adopting Lidar, with a significant number of Lidar-equipped models set to launch in China, indicating the arrival of a self-driving era.

China’s authorities have also been proactive in regulating self-driving technology. Autonomous driving services were approved for commercial operation in select areas, with Baidu and providing fully driverless rides. Several cities have issued road test licenses for autonomous driving, further pushing the envelope.

Investing in Infrastructure

China’s intelligent NEV market’s rapid growth owes much to the country’s steady investment in tech infrastructure. A 56-kilometer smart expressway has commenced operations near Suzhou, including a section designed for L4 automation self-driving vehicles. Nationally, over 20,000 kilometers of test roads for autonomous driving have opened.

The country’s robust information and communication infrastructure, including the 5G network and high-precision maps, plays a crucial role in supporting intelligent vehicles. China has built millions of 5G base stations and developed high-precision maps, providing accurate positioning and navigation capabilities for autonomous driving.
